[POLL] Should TSE run a Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 server?
[POLL] Should TSE run a Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 server?
I've been considering running a server for the game Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 along with the current Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory server. It's a relatively new game (released on November 2011) with great graphics and, from what I could gather, great gameplay too. Also, its minimum system requirements are very reasonable and shouldn't be a problem for most people:
OS: Windows XP / Windows Vista / Windows 7
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 or AMD Phenom X3 8750 processor or better
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: Shader 3.0 or better 256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT / ATI Radeon X1950 or better
DirectX: DirectX 9.0c or later
Hard Drive: 16 GB free hard drive space
Sound: DirectX 9.0c or later
Internet: Broadband connection and service required for Multiplayer Connectivity. Internet connection required for activation.
IGN's text and video reviews of the game:

Vote for one of the poll options and leave any comments and suggestions you might have. Of course The Sacred Emperor will do whatever he wishes in the end, but it's always a pleasure watching the populace relish in the illusion that they have a say on Imperial matters.

Re: [POLL] Should TSE run a Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 server?
I voted "no, I prefer a different game". The main cons for me are: 1) the lack of a Linux version and the poor performance under WINE (I'm on XP 64 but Linux compatibility is a matter of principle); 2) the lack of controllable vehicles; 3) gameplay seems to be much less team based than ET and too much CounterStrike-style. So which other game I'd choose? I really don't know, the only multiplayer game I play is ET and I haven't even tried other multiplayer games in a VERY long time. To play a multiplayer FPS game other than ET, that game would need to be very team oriented (like ET) and include stuff that significantly added to the gameplay, like fully controllable vehicles. Another big plus would be the game using OpenGL instead of DirectX.

I don't mind playing Modern Warfare, its a fun game sometimes. However, it is far and removed from ET. There is absolutely no need to work as a team if you are a proficient player. It can be frustrating when your team has the two highest killing players and is still losing because the noobs keep getting put into the meat grinder with no help.
Maybe since its on pc there are some cool team based mods for it?
I can't find any, but that doesn't mean they dont exist.
Also, I didn't know IGN still existed.

Yes. I've read more reviews and watched more gameplay videos, and that seems to be the general consensus about CODMW3.blaskattacks wrote:I don't mind playing Modern Warfare, its a fun game sometimes. IGN is stronger than ever as one of the leading game oriented portals on the net. I used to go to GameSpot most of the time, but they redesigned the site a few months ago and managed to turn it into a ridiculous useless mess, so I switched to IGN.

The Pirates Story....
where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Some times he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy, the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical, summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking, I suggest you try it.

I used to run one from my own machine with relatively no problems so it shouldn't be hard for you to get it going. Make blue balls run it. Wait hell just ban me

Sure, until one sunny day you get bored or whatever and decide to disappear leaving all of it behind for me to take care of. It has happened many times before. Of course I'll need to delegate stuff to other people, but I also need to be able to deal with all the burden myself at any time, because people just can't be trusted.
About TeamSpeak, the company that hosts the sever machine offers a very affordable package that runs outside the machine, thus not sharing network resources with servers running on it which avoids lag and other complications. By the way, did I mention that I've added another 2 GB of RAM to the server machine package, for which I'll also have to pay from now on? (HINT! HINT!) More memory means less disk accesses which translates into a more fluid, smoother game for everyone.
