"UMG knows that we are going to compete with them via our own music venture called Megabox.com, a site that will soon allow artists to sell their creations directly to consumers while allowing artists to keep 90 percent of earnings," said Kim "Dotcom" Schmitz, the German-born founder of Megaupload.

The kicker was Megabox would cater to unsigned artists and allow anyone to sell their creations while allowing the artist to retain 90% of the earnings. Or, artists could even giveaway their songs and would be paid through a service called Megakey. "Yes that’s right, we will pay artists even for free downloads. The Megakey business model has been tested with over a million users and it works," Kim Dotcom told TorrentFreak in December. Megabox was planning on bypassing the labels, RIAA, and the entire music establishment.

MegaUpload Founder Says Government Staff Among Users

Kim Dotcom says many U.S. government employees are affected by the shut down.

One of the big issues since MegaUpload was shut down has been the fact that users who paid to store legitimate personal files on MegaUpload's servers have not been able to access their documents. MegaUpload has been working with the Department of Justice to grant users access to their files, but the process has been a slow one. We first heard that MegaUpload was working to give users access to their data at the end of January. However, according to MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom, it's not just ordinary Joes and Janes that have been denied access to their personal files.

TorrentFreak cites Kim Dotcom as saying that while investigating a way to provide users will access to their files, they discovered that there is many high-ranking US Government officials with MegaUpload accounts.

"Guess what – we found a large number of Mega accounts from US Government officials including the Department of Justice and the US Senate," Dotcom said. "I hope we will soon have permission to give them and the rest of our users access to their files."

According to TorrentFreak, additional information on an "eventual resurrection" of MegaUpload is expected this week, so people that are currently without access to backed up files, photos, and other documents should be a little clearer on where they stand once that comes to pass.
